India’s Education Reforms Attract 9 UK Universities to Set Up Campuses

India’s new higher education reforms have drawn nine leading UK universities to establish campuses across the country.

New Delhi: As India has made recent changes in its regulatory framework for foreign higher educational institutions, it has caught the attention of several foreign universities from the United Kingdom exploring the possibility of establishing campuses in India, marking a significant step towards the internationalisation of India’s higher education sector.

Among the UK institutions that have announced plans, expressed formal interest, or received in-principle approvals are the University of Southampton, University of Liverpool, University of York, University of Aberdeen, University of Bristol, Lancaster University, University of Surrey, Queen’s University Belfast, and Coventry University.

Officials said the interest follows policy reforms that allow reputed foreign universities to set up independent campuses in India, subject to regulatory approval and compliance with academic and governance standards. While some institutions have publicly outlined their plans or locations, others are currently in the preparatory phase and awaiting final clearances before commencing operations.

The proposed campuses are expected to offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programmes across disciplines such as science, engineering, management, humanities, and emerging interdisciplinary areas. Education experts note that the move could provide Indian students access to internationally recognised degrees within the country, reducing the financial and logistical challenges of studying abroad. Expanding the horizon for Indian students and giving them a better chance for international exposure.

Authorities have advised students and parents to rely only on official announcements for details related to admissions, courses, and fee structures, as further information is expected to be released in phases.
