ARISE Project 2026 Announces PhD Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Artificial Intelligence

The African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS) has invited applications for PhD Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Artificial Intelligence (AI) under the ARISE Project 2026. Funded by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the initiative aims to promote responsible, ethical, and gender-inclusive AI research aligned with Africa’s development priorities.

Kenya - The African Technology Policy Studies Network (ATPS) has announced the launch of ARISE Project 2026 PhD Scholarships and Postdoctoral Fellowships in Artificial Intelligence (AI), inviting applications from Africa-based scholars working in AI-related fields. The ARISE Project—Advancing Responsible and Gender-Inclusive AI Capacity in Africa’s Higher Education Ecosystem—is supported by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.

The programme supports AI research across key sectors including agriculture, climate change , energy, health, education,  digital economy and creative industries. Research proposals must align with responsible AI practices, ethical standards and gender-inclusive approaches. Selected candidates will gain access to research funding, stipends, mentorship from experienced AI researchers and opportunities to participate in international conferences and workshops. 

Under the initiative, 10 PhD scholarships are available for doctoral students registered at accredited African higher education institutions, while six postdoctoral fellowship will be hosted at recognised African institutions actively engaged in AI research and development. The fellowship aim to deepen advanced AI research and apply innovative tools to address pressing societal and development challenges across the continent. 

Applications must be submitted online through the ATPS application portal. The deadline for PhD scholarship application is March 152026, while postdoctoral fellowship applications close on March 312026.
