Mumbai: In a significant move to promote education for everyone, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has inaugurated the city’s first “Signal School” in Chembur, designed to educate street and migrant children.
The school, which was opened by Mayor Ritu Tawde on Monday, is situated beneath the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road flyover, close to Amar Mahal. This project has been initiated in collaboration with the Mumbai Suburban District Collector’s Office and Samarth Bharat Vyaspeeth.
The focus of this initiative is on children who reside on the streets or near traffic signals and struggle to access formal education. Officials indicate that the aim is not only to provide education but also to cater to their overall well-being, including their social and emotional needs.
In addition to fundamental education, the school will provide practical learning opportunities such as vocational training, exposure to various industries, and activities related to science, computers, and even robotics.
During the launch, Tawde mentioned that the civic body intends to broaden the initiative throughout Mumbai. A survey will be carried out to pinpoint areas where similar schools are necessary, particularly in regions with a high concentration of street children. The plan includes ensuring adequate arrangements for the children during the monsoon season and securing funding for the project.
She also appealed for public support, encouraging families and communities to motivate children to attend such schools and take advantage of the available facilities. The corporation emphasized that the long-term goal is to assist these children in transitioning to regular municipal schools and integrating into mainstream education.
