CBSE Warns Students in Dummy Schools of Possible Exam Ban

The issue of dummy schools came under scrutiny after a JEE (Mains) topper was found to have studied in such an institution. The school in question, SGN Public School in Nangloi, was disaffiliated last year due to multiple violations, including the enrollment of non-attending students. A surprise inspection revealed that the school failed to meet CBSE guidelines, prompting strict action.

The Delhi High Court also weighed in on the matter, calling the existence of dummy schools a "fraud" and directing CBSE and the Delhi government to take immediate measures. In a ruling issued on January 27, 2025, a bench led by Chief Justice D.K. Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela ordered authorities to regulate such institutions and enforce attendance requirements. The court also criticized the practice of students prioritizing coaching centers while being formally enrolled in schools that they rarely attend.

Over 300 Dummy Schools Penalized as Crackdown Intensifies

CBSE has already taken action against more than 300 dummy schools across India, reinforcing the importance of traditional schooling. The board highlighted that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 promotes holistic learning, which is compromised when students skip regular school in favor of coaching centers.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government has downplayed concerns, arguing that there is no official definition of "dummy schools." However, the High Court has demanded a detailed affidavit from CBSE and the state government outlining the steps taken to prevent fraudulent admissions and ensure students receive a comprehensive education.

With board exams fast approaching, CBSE’s latest warning signals a stricter stance on attendance violations. The board urges students and parents to take school attendance seriously to avoid potential consequences.
