CBSE Mandates Appointment of Counsellors & Wellness Teachers in Schools

New amendment focuses on student mental health and well-being in CBSE schools. Institutions required to ensure counselling support as part of affiliation norms.

NEW DELHI: In a significant move to strengthen student well-being, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has issued Circular No. 02/2026, introducing an amendment to its affiliation bye-laws regarding the mandatory appointment of counsellors and wellness teachers in schools. The circular amends Clause 2.4.12 of the CBSE Affiliation Bye-Laws, 2018, making it essential for schools to provide structured mental health and counselling support to students. This step reflects a growing recognition of the importance of emotional well-being, stress management, and psychological support in the education system.

Under the revised guidelines, CBSE-affiliated schools are expected to ensure that qualified counsellors or trained wellness teachers are available to address student concerns, including academic stress, behavioural issues, and mental health challenges. Schools must integrate counselling services into their overall academic environment rather than treating them as optional support systems.

The move aligns with broader educational reforms that prioritise holistic development and student-centric learning, going beyond traditional academics. Experts believe that introducing professional counselling support in schools can help reduce anxiety, improve academic performance, and create a safer and more supportive learning environment. The development highlights a positive shift in school education, where mental health is being treated as an essential part of learning. It also places greater responsibility on schools to ensure not just academic excellence, but also the overall well-being of their students.
