CSIR NET 2026 Exam Date, Eligibility, Application & Prep Guide

The NTA is expected to release a notification regarding the CSIR NET for June 2026 in May. The anticipated exam date is July 2026. Information for science post-graduates on prerequisites, subjects, application processes, and exam patterns is provided. Here’s what you need to know, especially regarding how a qualifying score will now allow you to get direct admission to a PhD program under the NEP 2020.

The Exam That Opens the Door to Research India

For postgraduate science students in India, the CSIR NET exam is a critical step in their career progression. The National Testing Agency (NTA) is expected to conduct the CSIR NET June 2026 session in July 2026. The official notice is expected by May 2026. In the absence of a date, students should expect the application window to be announced shortly, as this has been the trend in previous years. CSIR NET confers two career qualifications: a Junior Research Fellowship and eligibility for a Lecturer or Assistant Professor position at an accredited university or research institution in India.

CSIR NET is the key to turning academic aspirations into funded research careers, with sessions held in June and December. This year, the CSIR NET is uniquely positioned, as CSIR NET scores will now qualify candidates for a PhD under the National Education Policy 2020, thus eliminating several university-level entrance exams.

Who Can Apply: Eligibility at a Glance

Eligibility for CSIR NET June 2026 is based on two variables: educational qualification and age. Candidates must possess a master’s degree in a relevant science subject from a recognised university. For General and OBC candidates, the minimum for the master’s degree is 55%, while SC, ST, third gender, and Persons with Disabilities candidates must have a minimum of 50%. Candidates who are in the final year of their MSc are eligible to apply, but they must satisfy the eligibility criteria at the time the result is declared. The maximum age for the Junior Research Fellowship is 28 years as of the cutoff date, with relaxation for candidates from reserved categories. For the Lectureship category, there is no maximum age.

The exam is conducted for five major disciplines in the science stream: Life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences, and Earth, Atmospheric, Ocean and Planetary Sciences. Candidates are required to choose a subject from the optional list that aligns with their academic background. For candidates from other countries, the Junior Research Fellowship is not available, but the Lectureship is. CSIR NET, therefore, is a targeted exam that seeks to select real scientific talent from a defined academic stream.

How the Exam Works: Pattern, Structure and Scoring

Each CSIR NET exam has three segments: Part A, Part B, and Part C. Part A is the same across topics and assesses basic skills such as quantitative reasoning, graphs, and logical and numerical reasoning. Part B consists of multiple-choice questions on a specific subject area. Part C is designed to evaluate the assessment of scientific knowledge and the ability to answer questions on higher-order thinking. The exam is scored out of 200, and the total exam duration is 3 hours. There is no assessment during the break in the exam, and no assigned break.

There are penalties for incorrect answers across all exam segments, but the penalties differ by subject area and question type. It is recommended that exam takers look through the official notification when it is posted. Results are announced under three categories: JRF, Lectureship (LS), and PhD admission only. The three-part result structure was implemented in June 2023 to ensure that a larger share of candidates receive exam results that are meaningful to them. Answer keys are posted to the NTA portal after the exam. For a fee, questions can be challenged. The final answer key is used for all reviewed challenges, and the results are posted.

What Aspirants Must Do Right Now

Serious candidates should prepare and organise the necessary paperwork with the expectation that the application link will open soon. Required paperwork includes a unique email address for registration, postgraduate mark sheets, the appropriate category certificates, a passport photo, and a signature. Application fees may be paid with an NTA-approved debit/credit card, net banking, or UPI. For the CSIR NET exams, general candidates paid Rs 1,150, OBC and EWS candidates paid Rs 600, and SC, ST, and PwD candidates paid Rs 325.

The 2026 notification may edit these fees. The submissions will remain open for three to four weeks after the application opens. Submissions are only accepted online. Aspirants preparing for the December 2025 session will be far more advanced than those who are just beginning their preparation. For those who are just beginning their preparation, daily practice with Part C analytical questions is the most effective way to transition from a passing to a qualifying JRF.
