Delhi Launches ‘Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana’ to Boost Girls’ Education and Financial Security

New scheme offers up to ₹1 lakh support to ensure girls complete their education. Aims to reduce dropouts and empower students from economically weaker families.

New Delhi: The Delhi government has rolled out the ‘Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana’, a new welfare initiative aimed at supporting girls’ education and financial independence. The scheme replaces the earlier Ladli Yojana and is designed to ensure that financial constraints do not force girls to discontinue their studies. Under the programme, eligible beneficiaries will receive financial assistance that can grow to over ₹1 lakh over time.

The scheme is structured to provide financial support at different stages of education, starting from birth and continuing through school and higher education. A total of around ₹56,000 is deposited in phases, which accumulates with interest to reach a higher maturity amount, helping families manage educational expenses effectively.

Targeted primarily at economically weaker sections, the initiative aims to improve enrolment and reduce dropout rates among girls. Eligibility criteria include factors such as residence in Delhi, family income limits, and school enrolment in recognised institutions. The scheme covers up to two girl children per family, ensuring broader outreach while maintaining targeted support. Officials have emphasised that the programme is not just a financial aid scheme but a step toward long-term empowerment through education. By linking benefits to academic milestones, the government aims to encourage continuous learning and completion of higher education or vocational training.

Education experts note that initiatives like the Lakhpati Bitiya Yojana can play a crucial role in addressing gender gaps in education. By combining financial incentives with policy support, the scheme seeks to create an environment where girls can pursue their education without economic barriers, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable education system.
