Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan Meets Abhinav Bindra to Strengthen School Level Sports Ecosystem

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra in New Delhi to discuss promoting sporting excellence at the school level. The meeting also highlighted reforms in sports governance and capacity building of sports administrators to achieve India’s vision of becoming a top sporting nation by 2036.

New Delhi - Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan met Olympic gold medallist Abhinav Bindra to deliberate on promoting sporting excellence at the school level and integrating sports more deeply into the education system. In a post shared on X, the Minister described the interaction as fruitful, emphasizing discussions on designing sports-based curricula, promoting sports-integrated learning, fostering mental wellness, and encouraging fitness as a lifelong attitude among students.

The meeting comes in the backdrop of India’s larger vision to position itself among the top 10 sporting nations by 2036 and accelerate global sporting excellence. To strengthen sports administrative capabilities, the Department of Sports had earlier constituted a Task Force on Capacity Building of Sports Administrators, chaired by Abhinav Bindra, to design a framework for professionalizing sports governance in the country.

The Task Force has submitted its report to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, recommending the establishment of the National Council for Sports Education & Capacity Building (NCSECB) as an autonomous statutory body to regulate, accredit, and certify sports administration training. It also proposed a five-level Capability Maturity Model (CMM) to help institutions such as SAI, National Sports Federations, and State Departments assess and improve their governance structures and athlete development pathways.

The report further suggests integrating sports governance modules into the training of IAS and State Civil Service officers, promoting structured placements, national accreditation registries, rotational postings, innovation labs, and partnerships with federations and the private sector. The Department of Sports is currently examining the recommendations as part of ongoing reforms aimed at professionalizing India’s sporting ecosystem and building a robust foundation for future Olympic aspirations.
