Rajasthan Reworks RTE Admission Policy: District Level Eligibility

Rajasthan’s School Education Minister has announced a major change to the Right to Education (RTE) admission system, allowing students to apply for RTE seats anywhere within their district, rather than being confined to a specific municipal ward.

The Rajasthan government announced a significant reform in its Right to Education (RTE) admission process on January 12, 2026, aimed at making school access more equitable and flexible. Previously, RTE admissions were strictly ward-based — meaning a student could only apply for a seat in schools within the ward where they resided. Under the new policy, students can now seek RTE-reserved seats anywhere within their district, broadening choice and reducing geographic barriers.

School Education Minister Madan Dilawar made the announcement at an education sector event in Jodhpur, stressing that the policy shift will encourage more inclusive access to quality schools for children from diverse backgrounds. Officials also highlighted administrative transfers affecting 14,000 principals, vice-principals, and lecturers, which were carried out without complaints,  contrasting with allegations of irregularities under the previous administration.

The district-based RTE system is expected to help families who previously faced challenges securing admissions due to arbitrary ward boundaries or limited availability of RTE seats in certain areas. By expanding the eligibility zone to the entire district, the government hopes to ensure that children from economically weaker sections can access schools that better match their needs.

Education advocates welcomed the move, noting that ward-based limits often restricted options for students without improving overall access. The district-wide approach aligns with broader educational equity goals under national and state policies.
