Dr. Pushpinder Singh Gill Appointed as Vice Chancellor of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University

Dr. Pushpinder Singh Gill has been appointed as the Vice-Chancellor of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University (MBSPSU), Patiala, for a tenure of three years. An eminent academician with over 36 years of experience, Dr. Gill is a retired professor from Punjabi University, Patiala, and has notably served as CEO for The Coca-Cola Company in Africa. Assuming charge on February 9, 2026, he outlined a vision to establish the university as a national benchmark for integrated sports education and high-performance research while utilizing sports to combat drug abuse in Punjab.

PATIALA : – In a significant move for Punjab's sports education landscape, the Governor of Punjab has appointed eminent academician and management expert Dr. Pushpinder Singh Gill as the new Vice-Chancellor of The Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University (MBSPSU), Patiala.

Dr. Gill officially assumed charge on Monday, February 9, 2026, at the university's office on Mall Road, Patiala. The appointment is for a tenure of three years.

A Distinguished Career in Academia and Leadership

Dr. Gill brings over 36 years of extensive experience across academia, research, and international corporate consulting.

  • Academic Background: A retired Professor from the School of Management Studies at Punjabi University, Patiala, he served there for over 23 years.

  • Corporate Excellence: He previously served as the Chief Executive Officer for The Coca-Cola Company in Africa (overseeing Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Nigeria) from 1999 to 2001.

  • Scholarly Contributions: He has published 84 research papers in reputed national and international journals and authored 10 books, including “The Punjab That Was Not”.

  • Administrative Expertise: Dr. Gill has also served as an expert for Public Service Commissions in Punjab, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, and Himachal Pradesh.

Vision for MBSPSU

Upon taking charge, Dr. Gill outlined a clear roadmap for the university's growth:

  • National Benchmark: He aims to position MBSPSU as India’s benchmark institution for integrated sports education, high-performance sport, and applied research.

  • Fighting Drug Abuse: Dr. Gill emphasized that by promoting a robust sports culture, the university will play a pivotal role in eliminating drug abuse from Punjab.

  • Collaborative Ecosystem: His vision includes fostering a collaborative environment where athletes, coaches, faculty, and industry partners work together to translate sports science into podium performances and sustainable careers.

About the University

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University was established in August 2019 to promote specialized education in sports sciences, technology, and management. Currently, the university has over 284 students enrolled across various disciplines. While the construction of its main campus is still underway, the state government has assured full support for developing sports infrastructure and stadiums across rural Punjab.
