IIT Bombay TU Japan’s New Double Doctoral Degree Programme Invites Applications

The programme is receiving applications for its autumn semester 2026-04-01

Mumbai: The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB) is open for applications for its Double Doctoral Degree Programme (DDDP), established in collaboration with Tohoku University (TU), Japan, in April 2025.

Applications are open as of 25th March, 2026. The last date for submission is 16th April, 2026.

The DDDP is a flagship academic programme founded by IITB and TU. It was formalised after the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for a Joint Ph.D Degree Programme in the Cotutelle mode, which enrolls a research candidate at two universities jointly, allowing them to spend time at each.

As such, students will carry out their doctoral research across both the IITB and TU campuses, spending 12 to 18 months at the host institution in Japan. Tuition fees are exempted at TU, and will be paid at the home institution in India. IITB will provide the stipend during the student’s stay in India, while TU will support them financially during the period in Japan.

The integrated academic framework of the programme facilitates joint supervision, enabling the student to be guided by a supervisor at IITB as well as a co-supervisor at TU. It also facilitates a single thesis and one joint defence, which are evaluated by the faculty from IITB and TU together.

The student is awarded doctoral certificates from both institutions upon the successful completion of their research and the fulfillment of academic requirements.

The research domains currently covered by the DDDP include Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, Digital Health, Disaster Mitigation, Energy & Sustainability, Material Sciences,
Quantum Computing, Robotics, Semiconductors, Thermals & Fluids, and Transportation.

The IITB-TU programme allows students to avail of the advanced research infrastructure of both institutions, facilitating interdisciplinary research while, simultaneously, blending academia and cultural exposure. This collaboration is ultimately aimed at the strengthening of Indo-Japan academic and research partnerships through the development of globally competent researchers and professionals.
