IIT Delhi Achieves a Historic Milestone in QS Rankings 2027, Here's What Changed

IIT Delhi holds the spot of the best Indian institution in the QS World University Rankings again. For the 2027 edition of the rankings, they have ranked 118th in the world. For IIT Delhi, this ranking represents the continuing positive trends in their metrics for employability as well as employer reputation and research. This ranking for IIT Delhi represents the best position an institution in India has been ranked in these listings.

New Delhi, June 18: IIT Delhi has once again been named India's premier institution for education and research in the QS World University Rankings 2027, now in 118th place internationally. Compared to the 2026 results, this is a five-rank improvement from 123 and is IIT Delhi's and India's best result in the QS rankings to date.

Announced on June 18, the rankings show that IIT Delhi continues to make progress in a number of areas. Most notably, IIT Delhi made the largest progress in the Employer Reputation ranking, which improved by 11 places this year, coming in at 39th out of all institutions. This ranking indicates the perception of employers regarding the preparedness of graduates to meet employment needs.

 

Positive Momentum in Employability and Research

This year, IIT Delhi also made a strong improvement in the Employment Outcomes indicator, which improved by 60 places. This indicator assesses how well an institution prepares graduates to be employable and to become leaders in their fields.

This year, IIT Delhi also saw a 26-place improvement in the Citations per Faculty indicator. This ranking measures the average number of research citations per faculty and research, which helps to assess the impact and quality of research done by the institution.

IIT Delhi Attributes Growth to Academic Excellence and Global Engagement

Prof. Somnath Baidya Roy, the Dean of Planning and Head of Ranking Cell at IIT Delhi, said the Institute focuses on world-class affordable technology education while enlarging IIT Delhi’s global academic territory. Improvements in the Institute’s infrastructure, reforms in the curricula, and international networking and partnerships were identified as main contributors to this success. IIT Delhi has improved significantly in global rankings, moving from 197th (QS World University Rankings 2024) to 118th (2027) in a four-year span (a difference of 79 positions).

IIT Delhi’s global reputation improved in many engineering disciplines (QS World University Rankings by Subject, March 2026) as reflected by the rankings for Electrical, Mechanical, Computer, Chemical, and Civil Engineering, which were among the top 50 in the world. IIT Delhi was also ranked 36th in the world in Engineering and Technology. The latest ranking shows IIT Delhi is among the top institutes in the world for Engineering, Teaching, Research, and Graduate Employability. Rankings also help promote India in Global Higher Education.
