IIT Guwahati M.Tech Admission 2026: Apply for Flood and Water Resources Management Programme Without GATE

IIT Guwahati is opening its second cohort for M.Tech in Flood and Water Resources Management. It is a hybrid program meant for professionals and does not require a GATE score for admission. The program also offers flexible learning with multiple entry and exit options. Candidates can apply until July 15, 2026.

IIT Guwahati Invites Applicants for M.Tech. in Flood and Water Resources Management

Guwahati, July 19, 2026 - The Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has opened applications for the second cohort of the M.Tech. in Flood and Water Resources Management. Offered through the Department of Civil Engineering, the program is targeted to both the working professional and the graduate wishing to obtain advanced skills in flood management, the planning of water resources, and climate adaptability.

The program will use a hybrid model of education combining the majority of classes offered online, with labs and final examinations conducted in-person on the IIT Guwahati campus. The goal of the program is to provide a higher level of understanding and skill to practitioners to address the challenges posed by climate change, extreme scarcity of water, and development.

Admissions will be offered based on a written test and an interview conducted by the department. A GATE score is not required.

According to Prof Hemant B. Kaushik, the Dean of Outreach Education and Skilling at IIT Guwahati, the combination of climate change, growing demands on water resources, and increased flooding has created a greater need for skilled professionals in the field. The program, he stated, aims to provide advanced knowledge and skills to professionals in the field to address these challenges.

Flexible Exit Options with Certifications

The programme offers opportunities to earn reputed qualifications at various exit points:

  • Post Graduate Certificate in Basics in Flood and Water Resources Management after 4 courses
  • Post Graduate Diploma in Flood and Water Resources Management after 7 courses
  • Master of Science (Engineering) in Flood and Water Resources Management after 10 courses
  • M.Tech. in Flood and Water Resource Management after all the courses and capstone projects

Learners who exit at the certificate, diploma, or MSc stage can resume their studies within one year of leaving.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must have:

  • A four-year Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Civil Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, or other allied branches of Engineering.
  • Minimum of 60% marks or 6.0 CPI on a 10-point scale.
  • Minimum one year of professional work experience in water resources.

Career Opportunities

This programme will enable graduates to develop skills in hydrological modelling, GIS, remote sensing, and flood forecasting, along with climate adaptation. The skills acquired will enable participation in water resources with the Government, International agencies, consulting, and research. The professional skills will assist in developing sustainable solutions to climate change on water and affected communities.
