IIT Madras BS Degree 2026: Admissions Open, Apply by 31st May

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is now taking applications for its Bachelor of Science (BS) Degree Programs 2026. Interested candidates can apply on the official portal at study.iitm.ac.in until 31st May 2026. What's new in this admissions cycle is who can apply. Anyone who has completed Class 12 can apply to the program. There are no age restrictions, no requirement to have taken the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), and no requirement that the applicant is not enrolled in another degree program. For many prospective applicants who have hoped for what seems to be an inaccessible IIT-level education, this is a welcoming change.

The BS Degree Programs offered are BS in Data Science and Applications, BS in Electronic Systems, BS in Management and Data Science, and BS in Aeronautics and Space Technology. These four specialized programs cover a variety of skills that are currently in high demand in the job market.

No JEE Required: Understanding Admission to the IIT Madras BS Programs

Unlike the other IIT programs, where students have to compete for admission to one of the country's toughest competitive exams, the BS Degree Programs have a different admission process. Through a qualifier, admission is extended to a much broader range of students across the country, unlike the traditional IIT education.

The programs are conducted mostly via an online mode, and as such, the geographical barrier faced by students in smaller cities and towns is eliminated. To ensure academic integrity, many centers across India are tasked with the responsibility of conducting in-person exams. The framework of the program is built in such a way that students are free not to be bound by rigid structure. The program also offers multiple exit points, allowing students to earn either a Certificate, a Diploma, or the full BS Degree, depending on how far they wish to progress. The programs are therefore directed at working professionals, students on a gap year, and students pursuing other degrees.According to Prof. Prathap Haridoss, Dean (Academic Courses), IIT Madras, the goal of the program is to offer students the flexibility to gain excellence without compromising on the quality of education. He emphasised the growing importance of students gaining a solid grounding in data, technology, and interdisciplinary thinking, regardless of the degree they will be awarded.

Pursue It Alongside Your Existing Degree

The IIT Madras BS program balances convenience with flexibility as it can take place alongside another undergraduate degree. Students enrolled in BCom, BSc, BBA, or Eng. programs may enroll in these BS programs. Using dual enrollment, students may enhance their analytical, technical, and critical thinking skills alongside their core discipline and academic field.

The flexibility of this dual-degree directly responds to what most employers seek today. Graduates having the ability to combine their field-of-study expertise for interdisciplinary and analytical problem-solving skills are most attractive. As a result of the expansion of employment opportunities, being versatile is no longer optional for the job market. The core of the program shall be the exposure to data analysis, business and engineering system decisions, and electronic and aerospace technologies. There is a growing number of students from all over India attending this program, validating the course’s popularity.

Fee Support Overview and Significant Deadlines

IIT Madras recognises that financial barriers do not need to limit educational aspirations and has put in place fee support for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. This means fee support can be awarded to students for as much as 75 percent of the tuition. Before the May 31 deadline arrives, students from low-income families who have hesitated to pursue a higher education in technical fields should take advantage of this opportunity.
