IIT Madras BS Degree Convocation 2026 1,460 Learners Receive Degrees and Diplomas

At a special convocation for its BS Degree Programs, IIT Madras celebrated 1,460 students, further establishing the program as one of the largest non-residential higher education programs in the world. The year’s graduates were from a broad cross section of social and economic backgrounds and included recipients of degrees, diplomas, and post-graduate diplomas.

Chennai, 1 8th June 2026: A special on-campus convocation ceremony was held by the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) to recognize the accomplishments of 1,460 participants of the BS programs who became eligible to receive degrees and diplomas. Among the graduands were 101 students from families earning between ₹1 and ₹5 lakhs, and 221 students from families earning less than ₹1 lakh. This cohort of graduating students included 634 recipients of the BS Degree, 197 recipients of the BSc Degree, 604 recipients of a Diploma, and 25 recipients of a Postgraduate Diploma. 173 graduating students also received Certificates of Academic Distinction and Merit. IIT Madras' BS Degree Programs are the largest non-residential higher education programs in the world. There are currently over 42,000 active learners enrolled from India and other countries. The degree programs offer a unique and flexible educational opportunity to a diverse population of learners, including undergraduate students, working professionals, and entrepreneurial individuals.

Celebrated during the event were the unique milestones of families (father-son and mother-son) graduating together In his congratulatory message to the graduates, Prof. V. Kamakoti, Director, IIT Madras, said, "In Data Science, Electronic Systems, Aeronautics and Space Technologies, and Management, we have identified fields of great importance to India’s future. These programs are geared to train the necessary talent for Viksit Bharat 2047. These graduates are not degree holders. They are the innovators and problem-solvers of the future who will help develop the nation."

Speaking about the graduates, Sarvam AI Co-founder/CEO Dr. Pratyush Kumar stated that "Building deep tech and scalable value adds in the coming decades would determine how India grows and progresses. As IIT Madras graduates, you are equipped to find the problem and build the tech, and you are encouraged to do so."

The annual report of the BS Programmes documented several student successes and accomplishments. Gaining a sponsored trip to Switzerland and ₹1 lakh, graduating BS in Data Science and Applications students Shriprasad, Saranath, and Shruthi came in first place in the EconUnion Validation Challenge. Earned by BS student A.K. Deepankar for the app he created called 'Bloom', the RevenueCat Startup 2026 Hackathon prize of USD 20,000 was also awarded.

Victors of the Mark Rober Jugaad Contest and competitions hosted by ISRO, IIT Bombay, Anthropic, and Google, among many others, are all students of the program. Through its BS Degree Programmes, the IIT Madras arm of the project actively democratizes and delivers high-quality education to a wider populace. While over half the students enrolled in the programme do so concurrently with another degree, approximately 14% are employed full-time. The vibrant student body consists of learners from all states and union territories of India, as well as some international locations. The programme also has a great social effect. 25% of active learners come from families with annual earnings below ₹1 lakh, while an additional 15% come from families with annual earnings between ₹1 lakh and ₹5 lakh.

CSR assistance and institutional scholarships have made it easier for thousands of students to pursue their education with little to no cost. The BS Degree Programmes are flexible and allow students of all ages and backgrounds access to quality education. In these continually changing times, IIT Madras uses its innovative model to show how tech-based educational methods can not only help broaden access to education but also help its students develop the skills needed to be successful.
