Karnataka to Phase Out Nali Kali Programme, Introduce Single Grade System from 2026–27

This move is assumed to affect about 25,000 schools across the entire state.

Bengaluru-The Karnataka government has decided to phase out the ‘Nali-Kali’ scheme gradually from government primary schools and, in its place, introduce a single-grade classroom system starting with the academic year 2026-2027. This move is assumed to affect about 25,000 schools across the entire state.

‘Nali-Kali’, which translates to ‘Joyful-learning’, was introduced in the 1990s and was designed as an activity-based learning model for classes 1 to 4, particularly in multi-grade classrooms where one teacher handled students of different levels. The system emphasised child-centric teaching methods, learning ladders, peer interaction, and flexible progression rather than conventional textbook-driven instruction.

Officials stated that this transition aims to streamline conventional management and improve foundational learning outcomes under a more structured system. Each system will function independently with grade-specific instruction, aligning with broader efforts to strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy under the revised system.

Education experts have, however, expressed mixed reactions. While some believe this structured single-grade model may improve accountability and assessment, others argue that the activity-based Nali-Kali approach helped in creating an engaging learning environment and inclusivity, especially for children belonging to rural areas.

It has been indicated by the government that detailed implementation guidelines will be issued for schools in the coming months. To better facilitate the transition, the teachers are also expected to be trained with the help of training modules.

For better clarity on curriculum adjustments and classroom restructuring Parents and educators have been advised to await official circulars.
