Maharashtra to Introduce 4 Year Degree Programme Under NEP 2020

Maharashtra will introduce a four-year undergraduate degree programme from 2026 under NEP 2020.

Mumbai : Maharashtra is set to bring the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 reforms to its state education with a brand new 4-year degree program to be launched from 2026.

Students would be able to opt for an 'Honours' or a 'Research' degree with this new system. The state of Maharashtra has officially agreed on introducing four-year undergraduate degrees. Beginning the academic year 2026-27, colleges across the state will make the switch to four-year degrees and depart from the traditional three-year course. This comes in a bid to align Maharashtra with the rest of India as the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 seeks to universalise the four-year course in all states.

Under the new provisions, the program aims to be highly flexible with multiple exit and entry points. The students who decide to complete three years of study will still receive a normal three-year UG degree. However, anyone who goes through the four-year course would receive an 'Honours' or 'Honours with Research' degree. The degree requires the student to complete 160-176 credits which will be managed by a new 'Academic Bank of Credits' for ease of transfer should a student need to move to another university or take time off for any reason.

The fourth year is supposed to focus on specialization or vocational training. The 'Honours' track will require the student to participate in internships and skill-based activities to develop their professional skills and improve their chances of getting a job. For students who choose the 'Research' path, which can only be opted by students with a CGPA of 7.5 and above, they would be required to carry out a year-long research work and produce a dissertation. With this change, it is being speculated that some students will be able to bypass the Master's degree program altogether.

Colleges that already offer a PG course or facilitate research for a PhD program will automatically be allowed to launch the four-year course, given they have the proper infrastructure. Other smaller colleges that have only taught the three-year degrees will need to seek special permission and meet stringent criteria in terms of facilities and staff. With the launching of this degree, Maharashtra joins states and major institutes like Delhi University and universities in Karnataka in implementing the 4-year course. This measure, state officials believe, will help produce better graduates who are more competent internationally. A dedicated committee will also work to monitor the successful execution of the new course.
