USTM Alumnus Honoured with Padma Shri for Contributions to Sericulture and Rural Develop

The University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya has expressed pride as one of its distinguished PhD alumni receives the Padma Shri Award 2026 for outstanding contributions to sericulture and rural livelihood development.

Ri-Bhoi - University of Science & Technology Meghalaya (USTM) has congratulated Dr Jogesh Deuri, a distinguished PhD alumnus of its Department of Botany, on being conferred the prestigious Padma Shri Award 2026, one of India’s highest civilian honours. The award recognises his sustained and impactful contributions to sericulture and rural livelihood development, which have significantly strengthened grassroots economies and promoted sustainable livelihood practices.

Dr. Deuri completed his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in 2018 from USTM under the Department of Botany. His academic and professional journey reflects a strong foundation in research excellence and a long-standing association with higher education and innovation driven development. 

The degree was formally conferred during the Fourth Convocation of USTM, held in the august presence of the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad K. Sangma, along with eminent academicians, marking a key milestone in his scholarly career. Through his research and subsequent professional work, Dr Deuri has played a pivotal role in advancing scientific practices in sericulture while empowering rural communities through innovation, capacity building and inclusive development models. His work has been widely acknowledged for linking scientific research with real-world social and economic outcomes.

University leadership noted that the national honour reflects USTM's robust research ecosystem to emphasis on socially relevant scholarship and its commitment to nurturing researchers who contribute  meaningfully to national development. The university community has extended congratulations to all Padma Shri awardees of 2026, acknowledging their exemplary contributions across diverse fields. 

Established in 2011, USTM is the first state private university in the field of Science and Technology in Northeast India and holds an 'A'  Grade accreditation from NAAC in its first assessment cycle. The university continues to promote excellence in teaching, research, innovation and community engagement with a strong focus on sustainability and regional development.
