NEP 2020, How India Is Modernising School Education for the AI Era

The education ministry has initiated changes to India's school education system to prepare students for the age of artificial intelligence. How Schools in India Are Adopting a New Education Policy, Digital Learning, AI, Skills, and Teacher Training

New Delhi. ; AI is going to affect future employment and how businesses will operate. The question is how modern the classroom is and how it will start preparing its pupils for this future. The Ministry of Education stated that the answer is the NEP 2020 (National Education Policy). The NEP 2020 is a long-term policy intended to integrate school digital infrastructure, skill training, teacher training, and AI within its framework. Union Minister of State for Education, Jayant Chaudhary, included these advancements in his recent written response to the Rajya Sabha to an Unstarred Question. The Indian government is looking to build a framework around education, rather than treating AI as a subject. This framework will incorporate workforce digitization and the teaching of new skills to students that align with the new workforce. This will also incorporate technology that supports education.

Building Digital Classrooms Across India

According to the Indian Government, the digital infrastructure of schools is one of the main pillars of this transformation. The ICT and Samagra Shiksha Programs provide and expand ICT and integrated smart classrooms in all states. The Ministry's updates show that over 130,000 ICT labs and over 117,000 smart classrooms are now operational across all states and union territories in India. This creates a truly large-scale ICT infrastructure and smart classrooms that support the teaching of technology-enabled learning. The aim goes beyond the setting up of computers. Schools are being set up to use technology in their daily teaching. This will allow students to partake in digital activities, virtual learning, and have interactive experiences within their learning environment.

Teachers Still the Focal Point in AI Integration

Globally, AI is changing the face of education. However, the Ministry has continually stated that teachers are and will be the focal point of the learning process. The Rajya Sabha statement notes the initiatives to strengthen teachers by providing AI-oriented professional development programs. Thousands of teachers have been trained in AI for All, CSIR- CMETech, and other programs. Over 1.28 lakh people have taken part in the AI and Computational Thinking courses available on the DIKSHA platform.

The Ministry has made prior presentations that detail AI-enabled programs such as Guru-Mitra, TARA, My Career Advisor, Vidya Samiksha Kendra, and e-Jaadui Pitara. These programs aid individualized learning and provide multilingual learning and assessment and teacher support.

Education for Employment in the Future

A primary focus of NEP 2020 is on education that facilitates future employment. Speaking of vocational education, there is the recent policy of introducing vocational education at Grade 6 under Samagra Shiksha. This policy enables students to learn vocational skills much earlier in their schooling. The Ministry has further committed to the integration of NSQF-aligned vocational education into its secondary schooling and developing courses that teach coding, AI, and other emerging technologies and, entrepreneurship.

This policy marks a shift away from rote learning to teach students skills for the labor market of the future.

Digital Learning Resources Continue to Expand

The Ministry has strengthened access to digital educational content through DIKSHA, the national digital education platform of India. The most recent updates show thousands of digital learning resources (e-content, virtual skill labs, and curriculum-oriented educational resources) available to students and teachers. DIKSHA’s AI-integrated features also provide keyword search, multilingual support, and offer learning opportunities to all users, including those with learning challenges.

The government is combining digital resources with classroom instruction to close learning divides and ensure equal access to quality educational resources.

Career Readiness Begins in School

The government is focusing more on preparing students for employment while they are still in school.

The Ministry says nearly 500 career cards have been created under the NEP 2020 to provide students with knowledge of many of the careers that will be available to them in the future. Career readiness is increasingly becoming a part of school education and will help students make choices about the jobs they will do and the universities they will attend.

The Bigger Picture

The Ministry’s latest updates reflect the sweeping changes that are underway with the implementation of the NEP 2020. Rather than considering Artificial Intelligence a technological advancement, policymakers are incorporating AI to strengthen instruction, personalize learning, and enhance skills for better job opportunities.

Digital infrastructure and AI will not suffice to improve learning. Prepared teachers, equity in Internet access, responsibly constructed and supervised AI systems, and flexibility in curricular guidelines will be needed while schools adjust to new technologies.

India is keenly aware of disruptions from artificial intelligence, automation, and digital technologies. Schools are increasingly expected to prepare students not just for exams, but for challenges posed by rapid changes in the economy.

Smart classrooms, AI-enabled teacher training, and pedagogical changes prioritizing digital and vocational education are examples of initiatives being mainstreamed by NEP 2020. While these initiatives are promising, the long-term impact will depend on the scale of implementation as well as learning and employability outcomes across states.
