New Delhi. ; The University Grants Commission (UGC) has issued a strong warning after identifying 32 fake universities operating across 12 Indian states, cautioning students and parents against taking admission in unrecognised institutions. The latest disclosure highlights a worrying rise in unauthorised universities, with the count increasing from 20 to 32 in just two years.

According to the UGC, these institutions are not recognised under the UGC Act and do not have legal authority to award degrees, making any qualification obtained from them invalid for employment, higher education, or government services.

Delhi tops the list with 12 fake universities

Delhi has emerged as the worst-affected region, accounting for 12 out of the 32 fake universities identified nationwide. Some of the institutions flagged in the national capital include:

  • All India Institute of Public and Physical Health Sciences
  • Commercial University Limited
  • United Nations University
  • Vishwakarma Open University for Self-Employment
  • Institute of Management and Engineering

The presence of several such institutions near regulatory offices has raised serious concerns over monitoring, enforcement, and student awareness.

New states added to UGC’s fake university list

The UGC has expanded its list this year, adding Haryana, Rajasthan, Jharkhand, and Arunachal Pradesh, each reporting one fake university. Among those newly flagged are:

  • Magic and Art University, Faridabad (Haryana)
  • Daksha University, Ranchi (Jharkhand)

The commission has also issued a specific alert for an institute operating in Bengaluru under the name “Global Human Peace University”, clarifying that it is not authorised to function as a university.

Other affected states

Apart from Delhi, fake universities have been detected in:

  • Uttar Pradesh
  • West Bengal
  • Kerala
  • Maharashtra
  • Puducherry
  • Andhra Pradesh
  • Karnataka

Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal reported multiple cases, including institutions such as Gandhi Hindi Vidyapeeth (Prayagraj) and the Indian Institute of Alternative Medicine.

How fake universities mislead students

Education experts warn that fake universities often attract students by offering:

  • Quick or shortcut degrees
  • Low fees
  • Flexible or online courses without approval

In recent years, many such institutions have begun posing as foreign universities or claiming international affiliations, making it increasingly difficult for students to distinguish genuine institutions from fraudulent ones.

UGC urges students to verify before admission

The UGC has reiterated that degrees from fake universities hold no legal value and can severely damage a student’s academic and professional future. Students are strongly advised to verify university recognition by checking the official list of recognised universities available on the UGC website before applying for admission.

With the admission season approaching, the commission emphasised that awareness and verification remain the strongest safeguards against falling victim to fake universities, which continue to target students across the country.
