The exam takes place over the course of a 2-hour, offline test comprised of four sections: General Hindi, General Knowledge, Numerical and Mental Ability, and Mental Aptitude, along with Intelligence and Reasoning. Candidates are advised to review the official UPPRPB notification for the most accurate details, as varying sources have conflicting accounts on the current status of negative marking.

In the case a candidate passes the written stage of the exam, they then proceed to the second stage of the exam, which consists of Document Verification and a Physical Standard Test (PST) in which height and other physical measurements are taken. Candidates who qualify for the PST will move on to the third stage, which consists of the Physical Efficiency Test (PET). The PET is solely a qualifying stage that consists of a running race.
