Lucknow,  : In a landmark decision aimed at strengthening medical education and healthcare delivery, the Government of Uttar Pradesh has approved the addition of 950 new MBBS seats and 271 postgraduate (PG) medical seats across government and private medical colleges for the 2025–26 academic session.

This major expansion marks one of the largest increases in medical education capacity in recent years, significantly enhancing the availability of qualified doctors and specialists in the state.

Massive Increase in MBBS Seats Across Government and Private Colleges

Out of the 950 newly sanctioned MBBS seats, 200 have been allotted to three government medical colleges, while 750 seats have been added to 12 private medical colleges across the state.

Among the government institutions:

  • Autonomous State Medical College, Amethi – +100 MBBS seats
  • ESIC Medical College, Noida – +50 MBBS seats
  • ESIC Medical College, Varanasi – +50 MBBS seats

With this expansion, the total number of MBBS seats in government colleges rises to 5,450, and private medical colleges now offer 7,350 seats, taking the total MBBS capacity in Uttar Pradesh to approximately 12,800 seats.

PG Medical Seats Also Expanded Across the State

In addition to undergraduate seats, the state has sanctioned 271 new postgraduate (MD/MS) seats, further boosting advanced medical education and specialist training.

Of these, 233 seats have been added in government medical colleges, and 38 seats have been approved for Narayan Medical College, Kanpur, in the private sector.

Following this expansion, Uttar Pradesh now offers 2,137 PG seats in government colleges and 2,160 PG seats in private institutions, creating a total postgraduate capacity of over 4,200 seats.

Government’s Vision: Strengthening Healthcare and Education

This expansion aligns with the state government’s long-term strategy to improve medical education access, bridge the doctor-patient ratio, and strengthen healthcare infrastructure, especially in rural and semi-urban areas.

By increasing both undergraduate and postgraduate medical seats, the government aims to produce more skilled doctors, enhance healthcare delivery, and reduce the dependence on out-of-state medical institutions.

Officials noted that the decision will not only address the shortage of medical professionals but also encourage research, specialization, and innovation in healthcare education in Uttar Pradesh.

Impact on Students and Healthcare System

The expansion is expected to open up greater opportunities for aspiring medical students, enabling them to pursue quality education within the state. It will also help meet the rising demand for doctors in government hospitals, primary health centers, and private healthcare facilities.

With the new MBBS and PG seats, Uttar Pradesh now ranks among the top states in India for medical education capacity, reflecting a strong commitment to public health and academic excellence.
