Grand Opening of Virasat Festival 2026 IIT Roorkee Celebrates India's Cultural Heritage

Virasat 2026 organised by the SPIC MACAY IIT Roorkee chapter, was inaugurated at Indian Institute of Technology, Roorkee with a classical dance performance , highlighting India's rich cultural tradition and focus on students well being through the arts.

Roorkee - The historic campus of IIT Roorkee witnessed the grand inauguration of Virasat festival 2026, a seven-day cultural celebrations, organised by the SPIC MACAY Chapter. The festival aims to promote India's classical arts, cultural traditions & holistic student development.

The opening evening featured a captivating Mohiniyattam performance by renowned classical dancer and scholar Dr. Deepti  Omchery Bhalla , who enthralled the audience with her lyrical grace and expressive storytelling rooted in Kerala's classical dance tradition. 

Dr. Bhalla, a leading authority of Mohiniyattam bring decades of experience as a performer, researcher and academic and has been widely recognised for her contribution to Indian classical arts at national and international levels. 

The inauguration was attended by Prof. Barjeev Tyagi, Dean of Students’ Welfare, IIT Roorkee; Prof. Pradeep Kumar Jha, Assistant Dean of Students’ Welfare; and Prof. Ram Manohar Singh, Faculty Advisor, SPIC MACAY IIT Roorkee Chapter. The dignitaries подчеркed the importance of integrating culture and creativity into campus life.

Speaking on the occasion Prof. Barjeev Tyagi said Virasat serves as an important platform to learn nurture creativity, emotional balance and cultural sensitivity amongst students, while reinforcing IIT Roorkee's commitment to holistic education.

The opening performance set an inspiring tone for the rest of virasat 2026, building excitement among students, faculty and guests for the cultural journey ahead.
